COURSE ARTICULATION
opportunities for College graduates

College courses are structured to articulate with university courses should a student wish to undertake a College course as a specialty stream within a university course. Students are encouraged to negotiate with universities, many of whom give credit for specific programs of study at the College. Each student is expected to seek such credit and/or exemptions individually on the basis of merit. College staff members are happy to advise you on such applications. The following universities have provided information about credit transfer and articulation for College graduates.


Australian Catholic University (ACU)

Graduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing
Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Nursing will be granted four unit credits in this eight unit Graduate Diploma following completion of a graduate certificate in the following areas: cardiothoracic, critical care, gerontology, palliative care, perioperative practice, medical/surgical nursing at The College.

Graduate Diploma/Master of Clinical Nursing (MCN) articulation
Students wishing to complete the Master of Clinical Nursing at ACU are able to do so after successfully completing the Graduate Diploma. Four additional units are taken at master's level, which can be selected from a variety of electives, a research project or independent study units. Students enrolling in the MCN may be able to take clinical units offered by The College (150-hour distance education subjects) as elective units subject to approval by the Faculty of Health Sciences at the ACU.

Students with a graduate certificate from The College of Nursing would normally enrol in the Graduate Diploma and then apply for entry to the MCN following successful completion of the Graduate Diploma.

Avondale College

Master of Nursing/Graduate Diploma in Nursing
Graduates of the College of Nursing anaesthetic and recovery room nursing, critical care nursing, acute care nursing, emergency nursing, aged care nursing, cancer nursing, orthopaedic nursing, perioperative nursing or clinical management graduate certificate courses, will be offered up to four subjects of credit towards a Master of Nursing Degree or a Graduate Diploma in Nursing. Credits assessed on an individual basis may be offered for subjects earned through other speciality graduate certificate courses. Avondale College provides studies on campus and by distance education.

Charles Sturt University

Master of Clinical Nursing
This course requires students to complete the equivalent of eight subjects to qualify for the award of Master of Clinical Nursing. Four subject credits will be given to students who have completed a graduate certificate from The College.

Master of Health Science (Nursing)
Four subject credits for the first year of this course for registered nurses holding an undergraduate degree or diploma and who have successfully completed either
(a) a graduate certificate from The College, or
(b) four individual 150-hour distance education subjects offered by The College.

Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing)
Four subject credits for the first year of this course for registered nurses holding an undergraduate degree or diploma and who have successfully completed either
(a) a graduate certificate from The College, or
(b) four individual 150-hour distance education subjects offered by The College.
Bachelor of Health Science Nursing with specialisations (eg mental health nursing, child health nursing, midwifery, nursing bioscience, long term care nursing)

Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing) (conversion degree)
Four subject credits for registered nurses showing proof of successful completion of any graduate certificate at The College.
Bachelor of Health Science Nursing with specialisations (eg mental health nursing, child health nursing, midwifery, nursing bioscience, long-term care nursing)
Four subject credits following successful completion of a graduate certificate at The College in any of the above specialties in this eight-subject conversion degree for students with hospital certificates and diplomas.

Deakin University

Graduates from the College of Nursing may be entitled to apply for advanced standing into Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master programs innursing. A Graduate Certificate is offered in diabetes education, and Graduate Diplomas are offered in the clinical specialities of midwifery, critical care, perioperative nursing and mental health. The Master of Health Science (Nursing) is an off-campus generic program that provides registered nurses with the opportunity to develop leadership skills and enhance clinical practice within their chosen area of speciality. The Master of Midwifery is available to midwives through either coursework or a combination of coursework and a research project. This will enhance their knowledge, support their advanced practice role and contribute to professional leadership within midwifery practice. Advanced standing may be granted on a case by case basis according to each individual applicant's experience and academic qualifications.

Edith Cowan University

Graduates of The College may apply for advanced standing in the Postgraduate Diploma of Nursing (Clinical Nursing) and progression into the Master of Nursing. Students must be concurrently employed in the area of their specialty.

Flinders University

All applications for credit transfer for studies undertaken in the Master of Nursing, the Graduate Diploma in Nursing and Graduate Certificate in Health will be considered by the Board of Studies (Graduate Programs) on their individual merits with the total combination of unspecified, block or specific credit granted to a student being no more than two thirds of the total unit value of the relevant award.

The Flinders University of South Australia - International Institute of Hospice Studies
Graduates of The College of Nursing Graduate Certificate in Palliative Care are able to be admitted directly into the second part-time year of the Master's degree in Palliative Care or the second part-time year of the Graduate Diploma in Palliative Care (once approved). All of the 'topics' for these courses are offered in the distance education mode. Both these awards are multidisciplinary and multiprofessional and are based in the Clinical Department of Palliative Care of Flinders University.

James Cook University (JCU)

Graduates of The College who undertake a postgraduate certificate or diploma offered by the School of Nursing Sciences at JCU are eligible to apply for credit up to a maximum of 25%. Postgraduate certificate courses consist of four 3-unit subjects, therefore, credit for one subject may be granted. The School of Nursing Sciences at JCU will be happy to discuss all applications for credit with prospective students.

Monash University

Graduates of The College of Nursing who enrol in postgraduate courses at Monash University, School of Nursing and Midwifery will be invited to apply for Advanced Standing. These applications are individually assessed according to the particular award the student is enrolling in and the University allows up to 50% maximum credit towards the award. A full range of post graduate studies is offered at Monash University, including Graduate Diplomas, Masters of Nursing and Midwifery and Doctor of Philosophy. Specialist streams of study include: midwifery, children’s nursing, mental health, gerontology, palliative care, critical care, emergency nursing and medical/surgical nursing.

Queensland University of Technology

Graduates of the College who undertake postgraduate courses offered by the School of Nursing at Queensland University of Technology are eligible for academic credit. Academic credit will be assessed individually according to the award completed and speciality the applicant is enrolling in and applicants may be granted academic credit up to a maximum of 50% towards the course.

RMIT University

RMIT Nursing and Midwifery recognises Prior Learning and grants credit for courses undertaken at The College of Nursing in similar programs and courses with like content. Students with a Graduate Certificate from The College of Nursing may apply for the Graduate Diploma programs at RMIT Nursing and Midwifery. Application for credit will be assessed on an individual basis by the Postgraduate Coordinator and approved by the Postgraduate Leader. The University credit policy allows a maximum credit of up to 50% of the award program.

Southern Cross University

Master in Health Science
Students enrolled in the Master of Health Science at SCU will be granted four (4) unit credits in this twelve (12) unit master's degree following successful completion of any graduate certificate at The College Students are also able to seek further credits on the basis of relevant postgraduate study and/or professional experience.
The master's degree is offered, via distance education, in the flexible entry mode i.e. enrolments can occur at any stage throughout the year. Students select their own commencement date and are then provided with a completion date for each unit of study. Students can enrol in a single unit at a time.
Streams of study include: perioperative nurse; surgeon's assistant; acupuncture for RNs; mental health; holistic health; advanced midwifery; special care of the newborn; women's health; health promotion; health services management.

The University of Adelaide

The Department of Clinical Nursing at The University of Adelaide offers the following specialties in its Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science program: anaesthetic nursing, cardiac nursing, clinical nursing, community psychiatric nursing, emergency nursing, general practice nursing, gerontological nursing, high dependency nursing, intensive care nursing, medical nursing, oncological nursing, orthopaedic nursing, peri-operative nursing, public health nursing and recovery nursing.

Students are able to enrol in a specific program in each of these specialties that leads to the award of the Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science (Specialty Area). The Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science is a 24-credit point program that consists of six 4-credit point subjects. A graduate certificate from the College will be equivalent to a maximum of 12 credit points (three subjects) towards the Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science. To be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science (Specialty Area), you must be employed in that specialty whilst undertaking the course. Note that where full credit is given for a graduate certificate from the College, the full program to convert to the Graduate Diploma in Nursing Science (Specialty Area) is available through distance education.

The University of Melbourne

There is the potential for successful participants to receive credit for specialty theoretical subjects towards the Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Master of Nursing Part 1. Credit may be specified, a subject with like content, or nonspecified, based on previous work with dissimilar content.

Applicants may also apply for recognition of prior learning for clinical experience if documentation can be provided that the applicant has the equivalent clinical outcome skills expected of the postgraduate diploma students. In some instances the student may be required to present for assessment to determine clinical competency in order to be eligible for exemption.

Credit will normally only be approved for the coursework components (subjects) of postgraduate course and the University credit policy allows a maximum credit of up to 50% towards a postgraduate award course depending on the student's previously completed courses. Each application is considered individually.

The University of New England

Graduates of the College are invited to seek advanced standing in postgraduate awards of the University, including the Master of Nursing. Advanced standing is individually assessed for each student according to the award in which the student is enrolling. Advanced standing may be granted for up to 25% of an award.

The University of Newcastle

Graduates of the College who undertake postgraduate courses offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Newcastle are eligible to apply for credit up to a maximum of 50%.

The University of South Australia

Graduates of the College who undertake a graduate certificate/graduate diploma or masters program offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery (University of South Australia) may apply for credit up to a total of 33 percent of the program. The School of Nursing and Midwifery is prepared to discuss all applications for recognition of prior learning from potential students.

The University of Southern Queensland (USQ)

Graduate Diploma of Nursing
Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Nursing at USQ will be granted four unit credits in this eight-unit graduate diploma following successful completion of any graduate certificate at the College.

Graduate Diploma/Master of Nursing articulation
The USQ Graduate Diploma of Nursing fully articulates into the USQ Master of Nursing. Graduates of the USQ Graduate Diploma of Nursing who wish to complete the USQ Master of Nursing are able to do so by completing an additional four credit points (4 units) of coursework, or by completing a relevant research project.

Students with a graduate certificate from the College would normally enrol in the Graduate Diploma of Nursing and then apply for entry to the master's program upon successful completion of their graduate diploma studies.

Effective units in USQ postgraduate courses
Students enrolling in postgraduate studies offered by the Department of Nursing may be able to undertake clinical specialty subjects (150-hour distance education subjects) offered by the College as electives, subject to prior approval by the Department of Nursing at the USQ.

The University of Sydney

Students applying for entry into a Master of Nursing degree at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Sydney, require the following: a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Sydney or an equivalent bachelor's degree; current registration with the NSW Nurses Registration Board; and post-registration experience of one year (minimum). Applications will also be considered in circumstances where the applicant has completed study at a graduate level without first having undertaken a bachelor's degree (e.g. a graduate diploma level course).

Applications for credit and/or advanced standing for units in the Master of Nursing degree may be granted on the basis of recent academic or professional qualifications. Each application for credit and/or advanced standing is assessed on an individual basis. Credit towards the Master of Nursing degree will be granted on the basis of professional study undertaken at the College (eg the graduate certificates in critical care areas).

The University of Technology, Sydney

The Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery and Health will consider applications for credit based on graduate certificates completed at the College. An assessment will be made on an individual basis, also taking into account other study and experience.

The University of Western Sydney

Graduates of the College who undertake the Graduate Diploma of Nursing at UWS receive the following credit:

Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Acute Care)
Four subject credits (for specialty stream) in this eight-subject graduate diploma following successful completion of any of the following graduate certificate courses: advanced nursing (acute care), cardiac nursing, critical care nursing, emergency nursing, intensive care nursing, neonatal intensive care nursing and paediatric critical care nursing.

Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Aged Care)
Four subject credits (for the specialty stream) in this eight-subject graduate diploma following successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Aged Care Nursing.

Graduate Diploma in Nursing
Four subject credits in this eight-subject graduate diploma following successful completion of any graduate certificate course other than those outlined under acute care or aged care. In this case the specialty stream would be identified in brackets e.g. Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Palliative Care), Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Orthopaedics).

Students enrolling in postgraduate studies offered by the Faculty of Health may choose to undertake 150-hour distance education subjects offered by The College as an elective for clinical specialty subjects.


The University of Wollongong

Students in possession of either a graduate certificate or who have undertaken a 150-hour distance education subject through the College are eligible for credit within postgraduate nursing courses at the University of Wollongong.

Students enrolling in postgraduate studies offered by the Department of Nursing at University of Wollongong may be able to undertake 150-hour distance education subjects offered by the College as an elective within their postgraduate program.
