US: American Thoracic Society publishes joint statement on renal failure in the ICU patient

15 May 2010: Despite the fact that recent medical advances have allowed healthcare professionals to stabilize patients who would have otherwise died, many stabilized patients later develop organ system failure. In fact, acute renal failure is one of the biggest threats to critically ill patients: forty percent of patients with this condition die. And yet, there is an acute lack of clinical information—and even consensus on the definition of renal failure in critical care settings—that experts cannot even agree upon its name.

25 May 2010: A six-month delay in releasing the latest Queensland Health patient safety report has been labelled a scandal by the Australian Medical Association. 25 May 2010: Legionnaire's disease has struck down 34 Victorians this year, twice as many as last year. The state Department of Health said cases of the potentially fatal influenza-like illness were "isolated" and spread across metropolitan and regional areas.

24 May 2010: Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot and ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, today officially opened IRT’s $99 million aged care village ‘Kangara Waters’ in Belconnen. ‘Kangara Waters’ offers both residential aged care services and independent living apartments. The aged care facility can care for up to 100 older people and offer both high and low care accommodation, including care for people living with dementia.



WA govt to match Rudd's health funding

24 May 2010: The Western Australian government has vowed to match any money that flows into other states' health systems if WA is denied funding from the federal government's health reforms. But Premier Colin Barnett says he is confident Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is just playing games.
